LCA Lesson 5

Lights! Camera! Action!

L/O: To explore the use of setting and colour in films

Setting
Why might a director choose the following settings?

1. An isolated house in a rural setting for a horror setting
To scare the viewers which is what the directors want from a horror film

2. A big city for an action film
So there is loads of room for the hero and villain to fight

3. A small seaside town for a romantic comedy
So the characters have a beach all to themselves.

4. A range of different countries for an action adventure film
So the characters could go explore the world and look for treasure

5. A large modern science laboratory for a science-fiction film
So there could be a experiment gone wrong

Colour
Why might a director use the following colours?

1. Red and blue for a new superhero costume
To look cool and those colours draw attention

2. A black suit for a villain
To blend in with the dark/night which is when a villain is most commonly out to cause mayhem

3. Bright colours for a comedy film
To make the characters look stupid therefore becoming funny

Look at the three film posters showing the setting. What does the setting tell us/suggest about the films genre, the narrative and the characters? Do the colours choices connote anything?
The colour may be used as a foreshadow such as 28 days later which could foreshadow death or blood.

Get creative
A science fiction film set a 1000 years in the future. The main characters are a team of scientists who are struggling to find a cure for a deadly virus that is threatening to wipe out their world. The virus has been developed and released by another scientist who used to work with them but was sacked when they discovered he was testing his discoveries on innocent people. What colours would you use for this film?
I would use the colour green for the virus/disease because that is the first colour that comes to most people's minds when you talk about viruses. Finally, I would use the colour white because the colour/shade white reminds me most of the future.

  1. Good Josh - some good ideas but not enough detail. The poster task only talks about one poster - there are three!
